The mission of SWEA Washington DC is to support and promote Swedish culture, language, and traditions while building a strong network for Swedish and Swedish-affiliated women. As part of this mission, we proudly award annual grants to projects and initiatives that highlight Swedish culture, art, language, creativity, and community impact.

2025 Grant recipient

Janet Sandoval-Reynoso was awarded the SWEA Grant to pursue her Master’s in Social-Ecological Resilience for Sustainable Development at the Stockholm Resilience Centre where she will be especially committed to elevating marginalized voices, including Deaf and indigenous communities and others whose experiences are often overlooked in sustainability research and policy.

2023 Grant recipient

Brad Harmon for his work on a translation of the acclaimed novel Who Killed Bambi? by Finland-Swedish author Monika Fagerholm. Brad later received a prestigious Translation Fellowship from the National Endowment of the Arts in 2025 to complete the translation of the book, which will be published in 2026 by the University of Wisconsin Press

2022 Grant recipient

Lynette Sifiso was awarded funds for the Words of Wisdom project, which is dedicated to the profound words and wisdom of Nobel Laureates. The project explored the rich history of the Nobel Prizes thanks to the generous support of the SWEA DC Scholarship

Shannon King for her Master’s thesis at Georgetown University titled Övning ger Färdighet: How Home Language Policies Affect Swedish Heritage Language Proficiency and Usage. Her research focused on the language choices used in interactions between Swedish speaking siblings in the United States

2021 Grant recipient

Nicole Fitchett was awarded the SWEA scholarship to participate in the course ”Sweden Global Business Project”. Through this course she studied the philosophies and practicalities of Swedish business culture, as well as partnering with a Swedish AI manufacturing startup to develop a strategy for their entry into North American markets
