Nordic Impressions Phillips Collection

Konst från Åland, Denmark, the Faroe Island, Finland, Greenland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden, 1821-2018 kan vi se på The Phillips Collection 13 oktober 13, 2018 – 13 januari, 2019. Vi hoppas kunna arrangera en SWEA Visit med guidad tur senare i år. Mer om det kommer senare.

Film Screening House of Sweden

Film Screening & Artist Talk: Hold Me Down. House of Sweden on October 16 at 7 p.m. Rated R.

Based on true events, HOLD ME DOWN depicts a day in the life of a 19-year-old single mother who works as a stripper at an illegal nightclub to support her child in the South Bronx. It is filmed in the locations where the events depicted occurred; in the Mott Haven Housing Projects and in an actual brothel, and features a cast of non-actors / women survivors of sexual exploitation and domestic violence.

Q&A with Director Niclas Gillis and actor Tanisha Lambright will follow the screening.

Film Screening: Cornelis. House of Sweden on October 21 at 3 p.m.

The film is the unique chronicle about one of Sweden’s greatest music legends – Cornelis Vreeswijk. An honest and gripping account of an exceptionally talented, but self-destructive artist’s intense life both on and behind the stage. A man who during his whole life was searching for love and confirmation.

Save the date: Family Day

Family Day at House of Sweden
In House of Sweden on November 3 between 10 – 3 pm. Shows at 11 am and 1 pm.

Join us for a day filled with lots of fun for the entire family. Two performances of the dance and soft circus show “And Then…” by company Claire Parsons & Co, film screenings, arts and crafts and other fun kids activities. The Family Day at House of Sweden is part of the Kids Euro Festival.

Viking Ship Visits The Wharf

The world’s largest Viking Ship sailing in modern times “Draken Harald Hårfagre” will arrive and dock at The Wharf on Friday October 5 at 1pm. Join the arrival ceremony or go see it before October 15.

From Saga to Opera

Noted composer and librettist Jeffrey Leiser presents a lecture on his new opera, Far Travelers, and its place in the continuum of works inspired by the northern lands. The work was supported by the American Scandinavian Association.

Far Travelers was adapted from two Icelandic sagas and was recently performed in part at the Guild Hall of East Hampton through an accelerated lab residency. Excerpts from the concert will be presented as part of the lecture, which will also include a Q&A with the audience.

SACU Luncheon October 24

Swedish American Cultural Union next luncheon is October 24. The guest speaker at this luncheon is Lasse Wierup, author and journalist with Dagens Nyheter. He will be speaking on the topic: Organized Crime – in Sweden?

The luncheon will be held in the Capital View Ballroom of the Marriott Key Bridge Hotel at 1401 Lee Highway in Rosslyn. Reservations are due by NOON on Monday, October 22. To learn more about the program and on how to make reservations, click on the link below.

SWEA Walks den 13 och den 28 oktober

Nästa Swea Walk blir på LÖRDAGEN den 13 oktober utmed C$O kanal från Sycamore Store på Mc Arthur Blvd. Där finns parkering och det är en väldigt fin promenad utmed floden. Vi träffas som vanligt kl.10.00. Som alltid är både hundar och familjer välkomna.

Söndagen den  28 oktober tar vi en Swea Walk på the National Zoo. Det finns parkering på Zoo men det är dyrt. På söndagar kan man dock parkera på Connecticut Ave . Promenaden blir som vanligt kl.10.00 .

Svenska Skolan för vuxna börjar den 8 september!

Uppmuntra era vänner att anmäla sig till svenska skolan så att de kan lära sig vårt vackra språk – eller förbättra det. Det finns fem nivåer; från nybörjare till avancerade läsare.
